A cylinder that is round, straight and finished

Boring and honing are two halves of the same job: boring brings a worn or oversized cylinder back to round and straight at the size you need, and honing gives that bore the surface finish a new ring pack needs.

We machine bores with the cylinder correctly located so the finished bore is square to the crank centre-line, then verify size, taper and finish before the block moves to assembly.

    The block is located so the bore axis is machined square to the crank line.

    Bore

    Material is removed in passes to bring the cylinder to the required size.

    Hone

    The bore is honed to final size with the correct finish for the ring pack.

    Verify

    Size, roundness, straightness and surface finish are confirmed.

What is the difference between boring and honing?

Boring removes metal to bring the cylinder to round, straight and near final size. Honing is the final finishing operation that sets exact size and the surface texture rings seat against.

Can any worn block be bored?

Boring is only correct when the block casting is otherwise sound and there is enough material for the required oversize. The block is measured and assessed first.

Why does surface finish matter so much?

Too rough and rings wear rapidly; too smooth and they cannot seat or hold oil. The correct plateau finish balances both, so it is controlled rather than left to chance.
